Teamwork for People with Insufficient Professional Skills

Written by Hanyue Zhang 2022 Cohort

Teamwork plays a crucial role in human evolution. It is also an essential part of socialization. According to the research done by psychotherapist Alfred Adler, people who aren’t willing to collaborate with others will have lower self-esteem. However, the reason why people don’t want to participate in teamwork is complicated, like people with avoidant or anti-social personalities. Today, I don’t want to dig into psychology. I only talk about some ideas about how to deal with marginalization when people lack technical skills.

For people who have less professional skills, it’s hard to find their position in a team. They often feel unworthy. Being marginalized and neglected by their teammates, whether their teammates are intentionally or unintentionally doing this. It leads to a vicious circle where they tend to hold back their opinion and express less so that they lack connection with others. Also, they get fewer chances to practice their technical and communication skills. They will then stay at the same initial level or make little progress. They will feel helpless, sometimes overwhelmed by sadness, anxiety and self-hatred. There isn’t something wrong with their personality; everyone who lives in vulnerable life will go through it. Unfortunately, many people without talent reside in this judgemental society, which means they always lack power through their averageness.

So, what should they do?

Bring a Good attitude

Humans are social animals; socialization is helpful in a team and contributes to emotional connections. They can put on a good attitude, such as being active and modest with their teammates, to create better communication which will alleviate their mental budget and strengthen their energy. They could handle more things if they were in a better mental state.

Be Optimistic

It sounds a little whimsical, but this optimism is not about their ability but the group’s perception of them. The current society is unrealistic, and the “sane society” is just imagination. But the focus on well-being, freedom and whole development will last forever. They are dedicating themselves to this beautiful ideal by looking at life through positive lenses.
