AI is emerging in people’s lives and is becoming a valuable tool in many industries. In contrast, with the high development of AI, many individuals think that AI may dominate and even threaten their careers and replace their jobs in the future.
We cannot deny the potential of AI to take over human labour in the coming years. And human beings are taking action to protect their rights and authority. On July 14, 2023, a news flash into my eyes about Hollywood Actors, writers, and studio unions together and beginning their 2023 SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike over a labour disagreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Many Hollywood stars thought this strike was a Revolutionary turning point in the film and media industry. There are many reasons behind this strike, including the hope for the increasing salary film studio and the retirement and healthcare plan. But the most crucial reason is the threat from AI that many of them believe that the use of AI in the film industry may replace their job as actors and writers in the future.
Will AI destroy and reform the industry of entertainment and film? People are concerned that the extensive use of AI will end the era of celebrities. Visual production in the future can capture human motion, language, manner, and even personality, which is a threat to actors and actresses. But there is still a long way to go. Barry Diller, who is a tycoon in the media industry, shared his perspective on this strike and stated that people are reacting overly too strongly to the involvement of AI. In his view, AI is unlikely to have a significant influence on the industry of entertainment in the next one to three years. AI already has an impact on the film industry but not far enough to destroy the industry.
The strike caused more people to pay attention to the emergence of AI not only in the film industry but also in people’s daily. As we enjoy the benefits that AI brings to us, like reducing costs, simplifying processes, and opening new possibilities, it also raises a new revolution about ethics and crises faced by people with the potential to replace jobs in different industries. But we cannot deny that no matter what, any industry needs to rely on technology, from the most accessible electricity to the latest AI.
In summary, instead of destroying our society, AI can create a new revolution like any industrial revolution that has happened in history. However, what people are afraid of is not ChatGPT generating the complete script in one minute but the power of AGI. And this is a new field that needs to be further explored in the future.
