As a digital media student at Simon Fraser University (SFU), I recently had the opportunity to explore the SFU Burnaby Campus. This field trip offered me a deeper insight into its unique architectural style, the inspiring legacy of Terry Fox, and the cozy dining atmosphere.
Architectural Style of SFU Burnaby Campus
SFU’s Burnaby Campus, located on Burnaby Mountain, is famous for its distinctive design by Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey. Dr. Gordon Shrum’s ideas directed the plan, which connects indoor areas and keeps lecture theatres close together. It was made to look classic and ready for expansion. Erickson’s design incorporates the university with the mountain landscape, avoids multi-story buildings, and allows different faculties to work together by sharing facilities. This idea makes SFU different from other universities. The design also makes moving around inside the buildings easy, especially during bad weather. Exploring the campus, I saw how its design mixes traditional and modern elements, creating an exciting and functional space. Although it’s a large campus, SFU made it easy to navigate by a user-friendly campus map app.
Terry Fox Field
I learned about him when I went to Terry Fox Field at SFU. He was a former student at SFU. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated due to cancer, he began a cross-Canada run from east to west to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. This field is named after him, and it’s more than just a place for sports. It represents never giving up, just like Terry Fox didn’t when he faced significant challenges. His story is touching and inspires students and athletes to constantly push their limits, regardless of their obstacles.
Dining Experience
One of my favourite parts of this trip was eating at the campus restaurant. A welcoming environment was created by the expansive space, which was highlighted by the large windows and high ceilings. It included a variety of self-service counters with dishes ranging from Western to Asian.
Conclusion
I learned a lot on my field trip to SFU’s Burnaby Campus, but it was much more than that. The incomparable architectural style gave me a strong sense of academic rigour. The Terry Fox field inspires me to chase my dreams no matter my obstacles. The relaxed dining experience was a delightful journey through global cuisines, reflecting the diverse and inclusive culture of SFU. Together, SFU feels like more than just a campus; it’s a friendly community where learning, entertainment, and inspiration combine seamlessly.
