A Retrospect of My Pre-MDM

Written by Lan

As my Pre-MDM program ends, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in what I have achieved over the past few months. Last year, at this time, I received my offer from the CDM. I probably couldn’t have imagined what Pre-MDM has brought me back then.

Initially hesitant to enrol in Pre-MDM, I believed it to be solely a language training program. However, it has proven to be so much more. It’s about communication, collaboration, culture, managing conflicts, and having fun.

Unlike my previous studies in China, Pre-MDM prioritizes practice over standardized testing, fostering a low-stress learning environment. In addition, there are fewer students in a class, allowing teachers to engage with everyone and consider their mental health. In this way, students can build a deeper relationship with the teachers.

I appreciate that I met such exceptional teachers. Aida is never similar to any of the teachers I have met. She is caring and easygoing and values every student. What I like the most about her is that she plays video games, just like me. It connects us like there is no generation gap in between. Jason is probably the most fun teacher I’ve seen. He has many engaging in-class activities in stock for us and always encourages us to be bold and try new things. And I admire him so much as his skills in game design are excellent.

I cherish the most the friendship I have formed with my fellow students. Sharing common interests, and worldviews, we always spent quality time chit-chatting, playing video games, and hanging out together. They will always have my back and offer help when needed.

I remember our enriching field trips that allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Vancouver’s history and culture. I remember our Halloween and Christmas; I remember the parties and gifts. I remember our movie and game nights, where we laughed much. I’m not sure if I’ll still have such good times in the future, but I’m sure I’ll miss it.

Looking back, I see how far I have come in my knowledge and expertise, and I am excited to apply what I have learned to my future studies and career. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this program and am confident that it has prepared me well for what lies ahead.
