Thoughts about the movie “Free Guy”

Written by Oscar, 2021 Cohort

This Friday night was amazing, the reason why was  because we had a movie night planned. The movie I’ve watched was recommended by one of my friends and she worked as a Visual Effect Designer in Vancouver. It’s called “Free Guy”.

This production has been in cinemas since 13th of August 2021 and is created by movie director Shawn Adam Levy. The main character called “Guy” is Ryan Rodney Reynolds and “ Molotov Girl” is played by Jodie Marie Comer. In the movie, Guy lives in a game city called Free City and his character is an NPC (Non-Playable Character). (Spoiler alert) His day is living in a loop from waking up, grabbing coffee in the same coffee shop, working in the bank, and getting robbed every time. This is because his bank is part of a quest in the game.

I really love this basic love storyline about an NPC player becoming an advanced AI which generates dozens and dozens of codes once finding his dream girl and helping her find evidence to sue Antawn, the CEO of the company working on Free City games. The primary objective for suing the company was because Free City was created by using the same code written by Molotov Girl and her work partner “Key‘s” and the intention to stop the launch of Free City 2, because everything will be erased including their own development game.

During the adventure, Guy reached level 100 or more to get close to his dream girl which he did and became the most iconic NPC worldwide, ending up being named “Blue Shirt Guy”, I liked the movie’s story base. The journey wasn‘t easy under Antawn’s reign, because he had the power to control the game, he was able to reboot it, temporarily go offline, or cut off the whole server, so the obstacles for our protagonists were keeping us at the due of our seats. Highly recommend for game enthusiasts!
